About Grayson Perry

Grayson Perry, a Turner Prize winner, Royal Academician, and CBE, is celebrated for his distinctive pottery and prints, often infused with political commentary and featuring his alter-ego Claire. Born in Essex in 1960 into a working-class family, Perry developed an early passion for ceramics alongside his exploration of transvestism. Despite familial disapproval, Perry embraced his identity after leaving home, committing himself to an artistic career.

Perry's formal art education began at Braintree College of Further Education in 1978, culminating in a BA in Fine Art from Portsmouth Polytechnic (now the University of Portsmouth) in 1982. His breakthrough came with his first solo exhibition of pottery in 1984, following his participation in the 'New Contemporaries' show at London’s ICA in 1980. The commercial success of this exhibition steered Perry towards focusing on ceramics, shifting away from his earlier engagement with short films and performance art.
