The Rhomboid Series

The Zig/Rhomboid series was created by Bridget Riley in 1989. It is an example of her exploration of colour and form and represents her Op Art style. Executed in the 1980s and 1990s, these works evolved from the previously harmonious order of stripes as Riley sought to find new ways to generate interactions between colours. Even more dynamic and complex, these shapes straddle two-dimensionality and three-dimensionality, creating a sensation of motion that the static, horizontal-line works lacked. By fashioning this innovative rhomboid form Riley claims a “whole new field of relationships opened up”.

Bridget Riley's mathematical patterns

The genius of Riley's creations lies not just in their visual appeal but in the meticulous precision with which they are crafted. Deeply rooted in mathematical principles, every line, dot, or curve is thoughtfully plotted to play a pivotal role in conjuring the illusion. The seamless confluence of art and mathematics in her pieces is what lends them their unique allure. Beyond the aesthetic, there's a fascinating science at work, a choreographed dance of geometry and perception.

The Rhomboid series

When first exhibited, many interpreted Riley’s diagonal rhomboid forms as painterly strokes, enlarged and formalised, deriving once more from Georges Seurat. Indeed, the integration of these forms by Riley was in part an attempt to rediscover pictorial craftsmanship. Overall, this series embodies Riley’s ability to invent and reinvent, and her ongoing, evolving understanding of abstract painting.
