About the artwork
"Pembroke Studio Interior" depicts the artist's studio with simple, crayon-like lines reminiscent of a child's drawing. The scene, dominated by primary colours, presents a much more playful interior compared to many of Hockney's earlier prints. The bright colours and bold marks evoke the work of Matisse and Picasso, whose Cubist period clearly influenced many pieces in the Moving Focus series, including "Pembroke Studio."
In addition to being influenced by Cubism, the series also showcases Hockney's continuous exploration of perspective, evident in his photographic collages. The artist endeavours to illustrate how his eye perceives and alters space from multiple angles, rather than just one.

The Moving Focus Series
The portfolio, created between 1984 and 1986, consists of 26 lithographs. Many of the prints also incorporate techniques like etching, screen printing, and collage to achieve a bold aesthetic. This collection demonstrates Hockney at his finest, seamlessly transitioning between styles and mediums with the confidence of a master printmaker. The title "Moving Focus" reflects his enduring fascination with perspective and its manipulation throughout art history, from the Renaissance to Cubism. Through works such as the series depicting interiors of a Mexican hotel, viewers gain insight into how the artist perceives the world. Hockney's eye captures more than what most people see, revealing his unique vision.
