Background on Antony Gormley's Sculptures and Artistic Practice
Antony Gormley is renowned for his innovative approach to sculpture, often integrating his works into landscapes where they enhance and become part of their surroundings. His most iconic piece, the Angel of the North, is strategically placed alongside the A1, greeting travellers to Tyneside and offering a notable view from the car window. Another significant installation is "Another Place" on Crosby Beach in Merseyside, where 100 cast-iron figures gaze out to sea, creating a meditative and almost spiritual experience for visitors.
Gormley's sculptures explore the relationship between the human body and space, often challenging the viewer's perception and inviting contemplation about the body's place in the environment. His installations are not only visually striking but also conceptually profound, making him one of the most significant artists of his generation.

The Exhibition
Antony Gormley's latest exhibition, "Time Horizon" is one of his most spectacular large-scale installations. It will be showcased across the grounds and through the house at Houghton Hall in Norfolk from 21 April to 31 October 2024. This marks the first time "Time Horizon" will be staged in the UK, following its previous display at an archaeological site in southern Italy.
Houghton Hall, a stately home near the royal Sandringham estate, provides an ideal setting for Gormley's work. The hall, owned by Lord Cholmondeley, features 1,000 acres of private parkland, enhancing the exhibition's grandeur and connection to the British aristocracy's historic essence.
"Time Horizon" features 100 life-size sculptures distributed across 300 acres of the park. These cast-iron sculptures, each weighing approximately 620kg and standing at an average height of 191cm, are installed at the same datum level to create a single horizontal plane across the landscape. The positioning of the sculptures varies with the topography: some are buried with only parts of their heads visible, others are submerged to their chests or knees, and a few stand on the existing surface. Additionally, about a quarter of the sculptures are placed on concrete columns that range from a few centimetres to four meters high.
