Mid-Year Art Market Update 2025:

Top Trends, Blue-Chip Performers & Selling Opportunities

By Hannah Scoltock

As we reach the halfway mark of 2025, the market for contemporary prints and multiples continues to evolve. At Lougher Contemporary, we're highlighting what collectors and consignors need to know now—from top-performing artists to new services designed to support successful sales in a shifting market.

Blue-Chip Artists Are Leading the Market

Confidence in blue-chip names remains strong, with seasoned collectors gravitating toward artists with long-standing auction performance, institutional presence, and strong market demand.

David Hockney

Hockney continues to dominate auctions with his signature landscapes and pool scenes. In early 2025, Arrival of Spring, 25th of March (edition of 25) achieved £192,264 ($254,000 USD) at Sotheby’s—making it the top sale from the series. Real Landscape, a work on paper, also fetched $127,000, underscoring sustained demand.

Andy Warhol

Warhol’s editioned works, particularly from the Cowboys and Indians, Mao, and Flowers series, are consistently surpassing high estimates. His Endangered Species series is especially desirable, with full sets and rare proofs commanding premium prices.

Yayoi Kusama

Kusama’s polka-dot and pumpkin motifs remain icons of contemporary printmaking. With over 480,000 visitors to her NGV retrospective in Melbourne—the most attended ticketed art show in Australian history—interest in her editions remains global and growing.

What This Means for Sellers:

Collectors continue to value artists with strong provenance and established market trajectories. If you hold works by Hockney, Warhol, or Kusama, this could be an ideal moment to consider consignment.

2025: A Buyer’s Market with Selective Demand

While interest remains healthy, the market in 2025 favours buyers. Compared to the fast-paced surge of 2020–2021, today’s collectors are more value-conscious and deliberate in their purchases.

Sales cycles are longer, and buyers are increasingly focused on quality, rarity, and provenance. For sellers, this means pricing strategically, preparing artworks professionally, and being patient are more important than ever for achieving strong results.
