Harland Miller: A Unique Blend of Art, Literature, and Wit

  • by Consignments Team

In the world of contemporary art, few artists manage to merge the realms of literature and visual arts as seamlessly as Harland Miller. Celebrated for his captivating paintings that incorporate witty book covers, Miller’s distinctive satirical style and cultural references have gained him a devoted following among art enthusiasts and literary aficionados alike.

Who is Harland Miller?

Born in Yorkshire, England, in 1964, and graduating from Chelsea School of Art in 1988, Miller began his career as a writer, publishing two novels in 2000: Slow Down Arthur, Stick to Thirty and At First I was Afraid, I was Petrified. Therefore, it’s no surprise that books and literary references feature heavily in his artworks, whilst they often explore themes of nostalgia, introspection, and wit.
Arguably his most iconic paintings feature oversized renditions of vintage Penguin book covers, which the artist first began producing in the early 2000s. These fictional book covers have titles that are humorously altered to evoke juxtaposing senses of familiarity and the unexpected. Miller often paints on large-scale canvases and is heavily influenced by both Abstract Expressionism and pop art in his use of colour and style. Throughout his career, Miller has had solo exhibitions in prominent institutions around the world, including White Cube, London, Royal Academy of Arts, Somerset House and Blain/Southern in Berlin.

About his practice

The artist also works in a variety of printing mediums, from screenprints to inkjets, etchings and embossing. Miller's screenprints are a testament to the artist's meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail, where the layering of colour results in a beautifully textured and vibrant image. His special hand-finished prints are entirely unique, and as such command higher prices on the secondary market. The highest value for a Miller print sold at auction was a unique hand-finished version of This Is Where Its Fuckin At that achieved over £94,900 at Forum Auction in 2021. As well as the hand-finished prints, his large scale works with small edition sizes also command a premium on the secondary market.
