A signed 1986 Home Made Print from one of David Hockney's most inventive series, made by the artist alone on an office colour copier. In excellent condition and presented in Hockney's original specified gilt frame, with provenance direct from the artist.
About the artwork
In early 1986, David Hockney installed office colour photocopiers in his Los Angeles studio and turned them into a printmaking press. Building each image one colour at a time, he could make, judge and revise a print within seconds, with no workshop and no printer between him and the paper. He described it as the closest printing had ever come to painting.
The Red Pot belongs to the still lifes at the heart of that series: everyday objects, saturated colour and the flattened space the copier produced, which Hockney welcomed as a new way of seeing. The red pot recurs across his work of the late 1980s, including the celebrated painting Two Red Pots (1987).
This impression carries exceptional provenance: it was given by the artist and passed by descent. It is shown as Hockney intended, in his original specified frame of water and oil gilt timber with burnished relief detail, a deliberate contrast between an ornate traditional frame and a print made on office equipment. Signed, numbered and dated on the front, with the artist's blindstamp, and in excellent condition.
Home Made Prints are among the most actively traded Hockney editions, and a complete set of 33 sold at Sotheby's New York in 2021 for $963,800. Works with direct provenance from the artist rarely come to market.
