The Kaleidoscopes

The Kaleidoscope is a captivating print series by acclaimed British artist Damien Hirst, released in 2022 by HENI Editions. Drawing on one of his most iconic motifs—the butterfly—Hirst presents nine unique compositions that blend natural beauty with spiritual symbolism and striking visual geometry.

Printed as laminated giclée works on aluminium composite panels, the editions feature screen-printed glitter and holographic elements that give each piece a radiant, reflective finish. This careful layering enhances the vibrancy of the butterfly wings and brings a tactile richness to the surface.

Meaning

Inspired by his earlier Kaleidoscope Paintings first unveiled in 2001, these works showcase meticulously arranged butterfly wings in symmetrical, stained-glass-like patterns. Each print evokes a sense of harmony and transcendence, echoing the form and symbolism of religious mandalas and cathedral windows.

The series includes titles such as The Soul on Jacob’s Ladder, The Dance of the Moths, and The Valley of Death, each suggesting themes of life, death, transformation, and the eternal soul—recurring concepts in Hirst’s wider practice. Visually mesmerising, the works are both meditative and dramatic in their presentation.
