About the artwork: FAZ-Übermalung (CR 122), 2002

FAZ-Übermalung (CR 122) represents one of the most fascinating and collectible series within Gerhard Richter's editions. Created in 2002, each work begins with an offset reproduction of a page from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), which Richter then transforms through the application of oil paint using his iconic squeegee technique. Rather than obscuring the printed image completely, the paint partially conceals and reveals the underlying newspaper, creating a dialogue between information, memory, chance and abstraction. The edition comprises just 32 unique works plus a small number of artist's proofs, meaning that every example is an original rather than an identical print.

The significance of the series lies in its synthesis of many of Richter's most enduring artistic concerns. Throughout his career he has explored the relationship between photography and painting, questioning whether images can ever represent objective truth. In FAZ-Übermalung, the printed newspaper—an everyday document associated with facts and current events—is transformed into a singular work of art through gestures that are at once deliberate and unpredictable.

The sweeping layers of paint are created using Richter's renowned squeegee process, allowing colour to accumulate, scrape away and interact with the printed surface beneath. This balance between control and accident has become one of the defining characteristics of his mature practice, making each overpainted edition both visually compelling and conceptually rich.

Unlike conventional limited edition prints, every example of FAZ-Übermalung possesses its own unique composition, colour relationships and painterly surface. As a result, collectors acquire an original work by Richter rather than simply one copy from an edition.

Why Collect Gerhard Richter?

Gerhard Richter occupies an exceptional position within the international art market. His works are represented in the world's most important public collections and remain among the most sought-after by museums, private collectors and institutions alike. This enduring demand reflects not only Richter's critical reputation but also the remarkable breadth and influence of his artistic practice.

For many collectors, Richter's editions provide an opportunity to acquire works that embody the same innovation and conceptual depth as his major paintings. Series such as FAZ-Übermalung are particularly desirable because they combine rarity with originality. With only thirty-two unique examples produced, each work occupies a distinctive place within Richter's catalogue raisonné and demonstrates the artist's direct intervention through hand-applied paint.

Over the past two decades, Richter's editions have consistently attracted strong international interest at leading auction houses and specialist galleries. While past performance cannot guarantee future returns, collectors are often drawn to these works because of their scarcity, museum significance and their importance within one of the most celebrated artistic careers of the modern era. Auction records for FAZ-Übermalung examples illustrate the sustained demand for the series.

For both established and emerging collectors, FAZ-Übermalung (CR 122) represents an opportunity to own an authentic, hand-finished work by one of the most influential contemporary artists of our time.

Great Experience.

I have just purchased a limited edition Damien Hirst artwork from Lougher Contemporary and Huw, Elliot and Jo made the process super easy. I originally contacted Huw about a specific work I had seen on Artsy and was disappointed to learn that I had been pipped to it. However, the Lougher team were able to source another one and I am now its proud owner. Jo organised delivery with great efficiency. Very happy.
